Reflections on Qi Gong

In these stormy times, our evening of Qi Gong and meditation held September 10 offered a calm and safe retreat as attendees were invited to shake off their stresses and journey within to find peace.

Co-facilitator and certified Qi Gong practitioner Wendy Dudley explored the roots of this

centuries-old ancient practice, brought to China by Shaolin monks. Initially, the practice was

preparation for martial arts, specifically Kung Fu, and over time it became a practice for the body, mind and spirit, with gentle postures mimicking animals and trees and mirroring nature. We learned that Qi Gong — playing with energy — is a physical expression of the Dao, often called “Nature’s Way.” It is about living in harmony with nature, as we are a microcosm of the universe. We, too, are nature.

Dianne Goldade, a certified Qi Gong instructor, led the gathering through a series of gentle movements, emphasizing that Qi Gong is about stillness, finding calm within ourselves. It allows us to take a break from busy schedules and to settle our minds and nervous system. Participants stood or sat, demonstrating that Qi Gong can be done in any position, even lying down. The movements were performed in what is called “in song,” not extending beyond any physical limitations.

Qi Gong is about joy, about having fun, and about boosting vitality and joy. Whether swaying like a willow tree — keeping our core or "trunk" centred — or waking up and stretching like a big bear, or tapping and cupping along the meridians that flow through our bodies, carrying energy to the different organs, participants agreed it was relaxing, calming and unifying.

Dianne could feel the energy of everyone in circle, a flow connecting us all to one another, but

also to something greater than ourselves. As Dianne explained, all is energy — we are energy, as is water and air and all life around us. Music, too, is energy, travelling in frequency and sound waves. Music of the wind and rolling waves, and music of the birds. Dianne treated us to a closing meditation, playing her crystal singing bowl and then her harp, while participants sat in quiet meditation.

It was an evening of welcome bliss, of learning that peace comes by turning inward, and that there is a wisdom in simplicity. That these are principles we can practice in everyday life. I am sure everyone slept well that night!
